Westchester County Observes National Correctional Professionals Week

Westchester County is proudly observing National Correctional Professionals Week, recognizing the dedicated men and women who work tirelessly to maintain safety, security, and order within the Westchester County correctional system. Established in 1984 by presidential proclamation to honor correctional officers, and later expanded by Congress in 1996 to include all correctional professionals, the week serves as an important opportunity to acknowledge the professionalism, courage and commitment of those who serve in this essential field.

Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins said: “Each May, we pause to recognize correctional professionals who exemplify professionalism, integrity and strength in a challenging work environment. This week provides an opportunity to honor the highly trained uniformed, civilian and contractual staff of our Department of Correction for their commitment to duty, to one another, and to the individuals entrusted to their care. Every day, they go above and beyond to ensure the safe and effective operation of our facilities while upholding the highest standards in custody and healthcare.”

Correction Commissioner Joseph K. Spano said: “National Correctional Professionals Week is an important time to recognize the dedication and impact of those who serve in our profession. At our nationally recognized Department, our staff continuously strive to improve operations and enhance the quality of life for both employees and the individuals in our care. While this week highlights progress and achievement in our complex field, it is also a solemn time to remember those correctional professionals who passed away while employed at the Westchester County Department of Correction.”

In 2021, with the support of the County Executive’s Office and union leadership, the Westchester County Department of Correction established a memorial bench and monument at its main jail complex in Valhalla to honor the contributions and memory of those individuals. Each year, a memorial wreath is placed at the site in remembrance of those who served with distinction throughout the Department’s 57-year history.

The Westchester County Department of Correction is widely recognized as a national leader in the field, noted for its comprehensive rehabilitation programs and accreditations from the American Correctional Association, the National Commission on Correctional Health Care, and compliance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act standards.
