March is National Nutrition Month
This year’s theme: “Discover the Power of Nutrition”
March is National Nutrition Month, and this year’s theme is “Discover the Power of Nutrition,” established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND). This campaign highlights how informed food choices and sustainable, healthy eating habits can fuel the body, prevent chronic diseases, and help communities thrive.
This year’s theme focuses on:
- Power Your Day: Emphasizing nutrient-dense foods, including fruits, vegetables and whole grains
- Long-Term Health: Understanding that food is fuel that affects mental clarity, immunity and physical performance
- Accessibility: Promoting access to healthy and affordable food for all
- Sustainable Habits: Focusing on evidence-based, balanced eating rather than restrictive diets
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics sponsors this nutrition education and information campaign annually in March to focus attention on the importance of making informed food choices, and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics also recognizes Registered Dietitian Day held on the second Wednesday of the month. The goal is to recognize the important contributions made by registered dietitians and nutrition professionals, who play a major function in guiding food and nutrition decisions in clinical care, education, food access and public policy.
The Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) at Westchester County’s Department of Senior Programs and Services (DSPS) are committed to improving the health and wellbeing of older adults. They are tasked with the monitoring and safe operation of local senior nutrition programs, ensuring compliance of all state and federal regulations. RDN’s are also responsible for menu development, making sure the meals meet the 1/3 daily nutrient intake for the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI). They develop nutrition education presentations in various settings and provide individualized nutrition counselling to high-risk older adults.
This year DSPS’s RDN’s will provide National Nutrition Month presentations at local senior centers and nutrition sites. To attend one of these presentations, please call your local senior nutrition programs for presentations and if visiting a new center, call ahead to make a lunch reservation and learn about other activities your local senior center can provide.
